"Mrs. Smith, 88, Descendant of Colonial Family" (1965)

Mrs. Smith, 88, Descendant of Colonial Family

Mrs. Lillian Taliaferro Smith, 80 [88], a descendant of a family that came to Virginia in 1630, died Wednesday at the Mar Salle nursing home, 2131 O St. NW, after a long illness. 

Born and educated in Salem, Va., she was married in 1904 to John Moncure Conway and came to live in the District while her husband was employed by the Department of the Treasury.

Following his death, she was married in 1928 to Herbert A. Smith, who was on the staff of the Department of Agriculture's forestry publication until his death in 1944.

Mrs. Smith was a member of the National Society of Colonial Dames, the Daughters of the American Revolution and St. Margaret's Episcopal Church at Connecticut Avenue and Bancroft Place NW.  She was a past president of the Washington Club of Colonial Dames.

She leaves a daughter, Mrs. Madison G. Nicholson of Buffalo, N.Y., two grandchildren and four great-grand-children.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Monday at St. Margaret's Church.

The latter married Eugene Alan Snider and with him had two children: Paul Madison Snider and Jane Snider.]
