Joseph E. Johnston to Eliza Johnston Hughes, April 12, 1874

Savannah, April 12th 1874

My dear Lizzie,

Your letter concerning the book gave great pleasure to Lily and myself. We were delighted at your pleasure, as well as at priding that you approve our "book." A little suspicion lurks in our minds, however, that your confidence in me as a military success is not so strong as it once was. This disappoints me somewhat. For, like Aeschylus, my ambition if more of a military than literary kind.

I am glad that some of the comments on the book made by the ex-president's underlings are not likely to reach you. Especially those in the N.Y. Sun and Memphis Appeal. The first attributed to Gen'l Dick Taylor's influence. The other signed George R. Phelan. According to these critics, my future as a writer was exceeded only by that as general.

Floyd's description of Norfolk indicates great progress in the last thirty years. It has improved wonderfully since I knew the place, evidently. Tell him, however, that Savannah has some advantages -- as he may find in any Ga. system of geography.

Lily has had no long or dangerous illness this winter, but has been confined to the house very much, and is quite unwell now.

How does Rob like the University? As much as William & Mary? I hope that he has such as inclination for mathematics as may bring him in contact with my friend Profr. Venable.

Remember to the Judge and Floyd.

As ever, Affectionately yours
J. E. Johnston
