probably footsore. I
pity him.
Next comes the Sonackamy
Nosackamy Monocacy or some name that knocks off my lower jaw. This is a
beautiful stream, falls into the Potomac, about ten miles from here, & is
very large for its length – Frederick City is 2 miles off from [h]ere. Junction.
This is Mother’s stream, born in Frederick, she considers it a Rome & (or
other knock name) being her Tiber. This is about 19 miles from Harpers Ferry.
Few miles on, from
Frederick Junction, . . . in view. Have always had great admiration for
that and reminds me of a young lady I
fell in with at Wheeling once I traveled to Bal[timore] & stayed day or
two. She was young, simple, very & well educated, came from Ohio. I was
very reluctant to part from her, & promised in good faith to visit her in
Phil[adelpha] where she was going to spend [the] season with a family,
relations, known to me as one of the “best” in that city. I never saw her
again, but have not forgot her altogether. Mary E. Edy [or Eby].
This region now is “Cassall’s[?]
Manor” A wide rich rolling plain, the Monocacy Valley, rich & flourishing
see here but few negroes
