Charles Johnston: 1826 Advertisement for Botetourt Springs, Virginia

Charles Johnston, advertisement, "The Botetourt Springs," Augusta Chronicle & Georgia Advertiser, Vol. 40, Issue 65, page 4 (May 17, 1826).]

The Botetourt Springs.

THIS Establishment will be open for the reception of company the ensuing season, as usual. The virtues of the waters, and the comfort of the accommodations, having heretofore been minutely described, and being now generally known, the subscriber deems it unnecessary to go on in details of them. He will only add, that his best exertions will be used to make the stay of such ladies and gentlemen as may honour him with their company, be as agreeable as possible.

To those who may find it inconvenient to travel with their own horse and carriage, he recommends their coming by water to Norfolk, from whence they can be conveyed by a steamboat to Richmond; thence in the mail stage, by way of Lynchburg, to this place, from whence they proceed to any other of the Virginia Watering Places by a hack kept by the boarder for that purpose.

Should they prefer landing at any of the Northern Cities, rather than Norfolk, they can come here in the New Orleans Mail Stage, which leaves the City of Washington three times a week, passing by the University of Virginia, thro' Staunton, Lexington, Fincastle &c.

This being the first Watering Place that the visitors from the South will touch at going to the Springs, and the last returning he recommends having their letters addressed to the Post Office, from whence they can, if necessary, be forwarded to any other place to which they may choose to go. Gentlemen will judge the expediency of this arrangement, when they are informed that eight mails, from different quarters, arrive here weekly, three of which are from the South.

A small Library is kept for the amusement of the visitors, in which will be found several interesting works lately published.
