The Trial, Part Two: July 11-12, 1985

The Chapel Hill Trial of the Pledge of Resistance demonstrators never came to be. Charges were dismissed in response to this clear case of civil disobedience. Republican Representative Bill Cobey was promptly defeated in the next election cycle (in 1986) by Democrat David Price. Cobey went on to lead the Huckabee for president campaign in North Carolina in 2008; at the time of this post, Price is still serving in the US Congress, and opposed the Iraq War. The Iran-Contra Affair tarnished the Reagan Administration through the end of its second term, but Reagan was followed by George H. W. Bush in the White House in 1989. The US Invasion of Panama began on December 20, 1989. Ronald Reagan died in 2004. Daniel Ortega lost the Nicaraguan presidency in the 1990 election, but regained it in the election of 2006. He was re-elected in 2011, and is, at the time of this post, the current President of Nicaragua.
