[John Milton Binckley, June 1859 Travel Diary, page 38. [continued] Dave is an extraordinary man. I found him surrounded with almost every evidence of penury and privation, yet obstinate in his everlasting pursuit of the sciences. He is careless, almost filthy in his dress, and has resigned all care for appearances, yet he never appeared in higher spirits or hopes. I have not spare in time to note here his present theories, and his manner of broaching and expatiating upon them. Suffice, that he mad[e] most of his Essays, his correspondence with the Smithsonian, etc. He claims, with proofs which I am to list when I get home, to be the author of the theory of the immutability of the magnetic poles, of which the poor fellow had never elsewhere heard, until to his dismay, I told him of it.


Met Henry Marven on the street. He lives across the street from Pettit. Dined with Wirick. Met Mr. Pugh, Mag's husband. Stay till Evening. Then go up to Pettit's. Mag & husband go along -- we go to a Ladies' ice cream saloon, get mint juleps etc. Part with them, & off. 


At Pettit's, find big Mary Smith. Live close by, shall try to get in to see Old Pete & the others. Mrs. Pettit has [continued.]

Dave Wirick = David Wyrick (1804-1864), an eccentric who "discovered" the so-called "Newark Holy Stones" and subsequently committed suicide by laudanum overdose.
