John Milton Binckley, June 1859 Travel Diary, Page 42

[John Milton Binckley, June 1859 Travel Diary, page 42. Many thanks to William Myers, Mary Davy, Sally Young and Sue Davis for their ongoing research collaboration; specifically to William for providing scans of the original document, and in turn many thanks to Peter Johnston Binckley and Patricia D'Arcy "Trish" Binckley (1951-2007), at the source. This is my rough transcription. Extra paragraph breaks inserted for easier reading.]

[continued] at Newark a message concerning the children. Nutarcala [Pataskala, Ohio?]. Hereabout, meet a Columbus out train, loaded with members returning from the Black Republican convention. I learn from a passenger that they nominated for Governor, Dennison of Columbus.

Here we meet a rock ribbed and beautiful creek. Extensive clearings of timber, make the country look new. In the cornfields, they appear in places to be planting; in others, to have hoed it over once since up.

Here appears a ruin, ruin of once a house, brick, that is singular in Ohio. Only cabins of the settlers ruin in Ohio. Once built, brick or other houses are filled and new ones are only for new people. Oh, but it is, I find, a ruined brick kiln.

Getting near Columbus.  Strike the Scioto country, fine creek, farmhouses. Elegant, rich & complete, boys, stumps, corn, brick kilns, etc.

Columbus. A large long and very Elegant Bar faces the cars in Depot. Step[?] out for cigars. Meet Mr. Reed, cousin of Theodore, from N. Orleans. Met him last winter, forgot him. Recognized me, and was glad to see him. He goes home, & will be with me to Xenia.

Dennison - William Dennison, Jr. (1815-1882). Elected Governor of Ohio.]
