[Lucy Waller Massie at "Oakland" [Virginia] to Sarah "Sally" Tate Steptoe Massie [at Pharsalia, Nelson County, Virginia], April 15, 1817. Massie Family Papers, Virginia Historical Society. This is my rough, annotated transcription from a copy graciously provided by William Myers. Extra paragraph breaks inserted for easier reading.]
Dear Sister
Your husband left here this morning with the determination of going to the Falling-Spring and in that event he will be absent much longer than either of you expected when you parted. Do let me beg of you to come and spend your time with me while he is gone, indeed it’s his request as well as mine, he desires you will ride the old stump-sucker, and let Cheser[?] plough the mare he got from Mitchel. I shall get Brother to go over for you, and if you do not come I shall be very much disappointed, and know your only excuse can be a want of inclination.
