Peter Carr Johnston to Dr. John Warfield Johnston, May 24, 1818

[Peter Carr Johnston at Lynchburg, Virginia, to Dr. John Warfield Johnston at Abingdon, Virginia, May 24, 1818, Box 1, John Warfield Johnston Papers, 1778-1890, David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University].

Lynchburg May 24th 1818

Dear Doctor,

This epistle will be borne by Mr. William J. Morris, a merchant of this place who may perhaps remain a few days in our village. If he does, do me the favor to shew him some little civility. You will find him rather weak in the upper story, but genteel, and very well meaning, and more worthy than you can often find. It would make his time pass off much less heavily if you were to shew him to some of our acquaintances; and I know in this instance any little service of that sort would not be bestowed on an unworthy or an ungrateful character.

Mr. Gilmer, whom I saw a few days ago, desired me to inform you that the business you had commissioned him to execute would be arranged at the June court (I do not know what time of the month).

Mr. Morris will give you a flask and your skeet & trap, and a supply of  Pegon[?] & Andrews will be sent out before long, in the box which will contain my father's tobacco.

If the present sickness of this place increases with the advance of summer, I shall very probably fly from the dangers that threaten here, and either take refuge in your cabin, which will be finished I hope in time to afford me shelter. There I think your physick, and a little hunting and venison occasionally, will make me entirely proof against the attacks of Disease. And then we will talk over that plan which you sugge[ested] not long since. As it is uncertain tho' . . . that I shall come out, it would be well to say nothing of the probability of my doing so to any body. I would rather take people by surprise.

Give me affectionate regards to sister Louisa and believe me
yours Truely
P.C. Johnston

[p.s.] They say that Susan is about to be married to McD.  Is it true?  [Yes, it was true: Susan Smith Preston (1800-1847) subsequently married James McDowell (1795-1854), future Governor of Virginia, on September 7, 1818, in Abingdon].

[Dr. John Warfield Johnston (December 14, 1790-December 10, 1818)
Peter Carr Johnston (February 24, 1793-March 2, 1877)
Louisa Smith Bowen Johnston (February 18, 1800-March 17, 1873)].

For their help and assistance, many thanks to the staff of the David M. Rubenstein Rare Book & Manuscript Library, Duke University, Durham, North Carolina. For more information about the John Warfield Johnston Papers, here's a link to the guide.
